Politics 9: CAMERON AND EUROPE
May 1st, 2016 by admin
It occurs to Donec that a vast number of people are likely to vote LEAVE simply because they cannot stand Cameron. We cannot fault their judgement as regards the man, but we wonder if leaving the EU is a price worth paying simply for the pleasure of his absence.
Any suggestions? We suggest that the leaders of the LEAVE movement give the electorate and Europe an undertaking that, if LEAVE wins, a new government, under a new Prime Minister, will not commit the country to a continuance of its membership of the European Union, but would be open to the suggestion that the situation br reviewed. Who knows – if LEAVE wins, and Europe is disappointed, the community might become more accommodating than it has been towards Cameron.
If that proves not to be the case, so be it. There is absolutely no reason why Britain, outside the EU, should not remain the best friend Europe ever had, through the NATO alliance and in the spirit that Winston Churchill envisaged for the relationship between the island and the continent. He would never have joined, by the way.
So the first step, in Donec’s humble opinion, is for the Conservatives to ensure that Cameron leaves Number 10 as soon as possible, so that leaders with just a reasonable amount of heart, soul, brain, judgement, charm and integrity (all conspicuously absent from the Cameron persona) could, if they so wished, sit down with Europe to talk things over.
Donec’s gut feeling is that, as long as the UK’s laws and courts remain under the control of Brussels, and the UK (fundamentally an island with limited space) is not be entitled to control its own borders, membership of the EU is unacceptable.
We live in exciting times.
Best wishes,
Donec.
